Upstream
by John Doffelmyer

Sunrise sorts the shadowed shapes
through cobwebbed windows,
new tracks of dreams
left dancing on old wallpaper
I cannot read
awake.

I run upstream through time,
a bouldered creek thick
with alders and dogwood bloom
offering no bank escape--
thigh weary and wet
I float back
as daylight empties
into a wider river
    flats and farms
    consumed by cities below.

The channel to the sea is lost--
no way back
    to the granite lakes
    where cumulus float
    on blue
    where I once walked
    on the edge
    of clouds.
